He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 1991.
Jimmy McLarnin was born in Hillsborough, Ireland, U.K. on December 19, 1907. He made his professional debut at the age of 16 years on December 19, 1923 against Young Fry. McLarnin defeated Fry via 1st round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
McLarnin got his first shot at a world title at the age of 20 after 43 professional fights. On May 21, 1928 McLarnin challenged Sammy Mandell's The Ring lightweight title but lost via 15-round unanimous decision.
He became a world champion on May 29, 1933 at the age of 25 years, after by defeating Young Corbett III, the then-reining The Ring welterweight champion, via 1st round TKO. This was his 63rd fight as a professional.
McLarnin's last fight was a unanimous decision victory over Lou Ambers at age 28, on November 20, 1936.
