Guillermo Rigondeaux was born in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba on September 30, 1980. He made his professional debut at the age of 28 years on May 22, 2009 against Juan Noriega. Rigondeaux defeated Noriega via 3rd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Rigondeaux became a world champion at the age of 31 after 8 professional fights. He challenged Rico Ramos for the WBA super-bantamweight title and stopped the champion in the 6th of the 12-round fight, winning his first world title.
He then went on to successfully win the bantamweight (WBA) titles also to become a two-division world champion.
