Wilfredo Vázquez was born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico on August 2, 1960. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on January 29, 1981 against William Ramos. Vázquez lost to Ramos via 4 round points decision. Not a good start!
Vázquez got his first shot at a world title at the age of 25 after 24 professional fights. On February 8, 1986 Vázquez challenged Miguel Lora's WBC bantamweight title but lost via 12-round unanimous decision.
He became a world champion on October 4, 1987 at the age of 27 years, after by defeating Park Chan-young, the then-reining WBA bantamweight champion, via 10th round TKO. This was his 31st fight as a professional.
Vázquez then went on to successfully conquer the super-bantamweight (WBA) and featherweight (WBA) divisions as well to become a three-division world champion.
Vázquez' last fight was a 2nd-round KO victory over Eddy Saenz at age 42, on October 11, 2002.
