Jim Watt was born in Glasgow, Scotland on July 18, 1948. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on October 30, 1968 against Santos Martins. Watt defeated Martins via 4th round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Watt became a world champion at the age of 30 after 40 professional fights. He challenged Alfredo Pitalua for the vacant WBC lightweight title and stopped Pitalua in the 12th of the 15-round fight, winning his first world title.
He then went on to successfully win the The Ring lightweight world title as well.
Watt's last fight was a unanimous decision loss to Alexis Argüello at age 32, on June 20, 1981, in which he lost his WBC and The Ring lightweight titles.
