José Torres (Chegüi) was a Puerto Rican professional boxer. He was a light-heavyweight world champion with 3 world-title wins. In a career spanning 11 years, 1 month, and 20 days, Torres amassed a record of 41-3-1, which includes 29 wins via KO, 2 of which were in world-title fights. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 1997.
José Torres was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico on May 3, 1936. He made his professional debut at the age of 22 years on May 24, 1958 against Gene Hamilton. Torres defeated Hamilton via 1st round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Torres became a world champion fight at the age of 28 after 36 professional fights. He challenged Willie Pastrano for the WBA, WBC, and The Ring light-heavyweight titles and stopped the champion in the 9th of the 15-round fight, winning his first world titles. With this win, he also became the undisputed light-heavyweight world champion — in his very first world-title fight.
Torres' last fight was a 2nd-round KO victory over Charley Green at age 33, on July 14, 1969.
