Jose Badillo was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico on September 9, 1970. He made his professional debut at the age of 19 years on April 7, 1990 against Teodoro Pizarro. Badillo defeated Pizarro via 3rd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Badillo got his first shot at a world title at the age of 25 after 17 professional fights. On December 9, 1995 Badillo challenged Tom Johnson's IBF featherweight title but lost via 12-round majority decision.
