Kirk Johnson was born in North Preston, Nova Scotia, Canada on June 29, 1972. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on April 4, 1993 against Andre Smiley. Johnson defeated Smiley via 3rd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Johnson got his first shot at a world title at the age of 30 after 33 professional fights. On July 27, 2002 Johnson challenged John Ruiz' WBA heavyweight title but lost via 10th round disqualification. Johnson never got a world-title shot again.
