José Cuevas (Pipino) is a 66-year-old retired Mexican professional boxer. He is a former welterweight world champion. In a career spanning 17 years, 10 months, and 11 days, Cuevas amassed a record of 35-15, which includes 31 wins via KO, 11 of which were in world-title fights. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) in 2002.
José Cuevas was born in Santo Tomás de los Plátanos, Mexico on December 27, 1957. He made his professional debut at the age of 13 years on November 14, 1971 against Alfredo Castro. Cuevas lost to Castro via 2nd round KO. Not a good start!
Cuevas became a world champion at the age of 18 after 21 professional fights. He challenged Ángel Espada for the WBA welterweight title and stopped the champion in the 2nd of the 15-round fight, winning his first world title.
Cuevas' last fight was a 2nd-round KO loss to Lupe Aquino at age 31, on September 25, 1989.
