Rubén Olivares was born in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico on January 14, 1947. He made his professional debut at the age of 17 years on January 4, 1965 against Isidro Sotelo. Olivares defeated Sotelo via 1st round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Olivares became a world champion fight at the age of 22 after 53 professional fights. He challenged Lionel Rose for the WBA, WBC, and The Ring bantamweight titles and stopped the champion in the 5th of the 15-round fight, winning his first world titles. With this win, he also became the undisputed bantamweight world champion — in his very first world-title fight.
He then went on to successfully win the featherweight (WBA, WBC) titles also to become a two-division world champion — and undisputed at bantamweight.
Olivares' last fight was a 4th-round KO loss to Ignacio Madrid at age 41, on March 12, 1988.
