Alfonso Ratliff was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi, U.S. on February 18, 1956. He made his professional debut at the age of 24 years on August 25, 1980 against Jim Flynn. Ratliff defeated Flynn via 1st round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Ratliff became a world champion at the age of 29 after 21 professional fights. He challenged Carlos De León for the WBC cruiserweight title and defeated the champion via 12-round split decision, winning his first world title.
