Carl Griffith was born in Lorain, Ohio, U.S. on August 13, 1969. He made his professional debut at the age of 19 years on September 15, 1988 against Joe Brown. Griffith defeated Brown via 4-round unanimous decision, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Griffith got his first shot at a world title at the age of 25 after 34 professional fights. On November 18, 1994 Griffith challenged Oscar De La Hoya's WBO lightweight title but lost via 3rd round TKO. Griffith never got a world-title shot again.
