Carlos Gerena was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico on January 12, 1971. He made his professional debut at the age of 22 years on July 17, 1993 against Jacob Hernandez. Gerena defeated Hernandez via 1st round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Gerena got his first shot at a world title at the age of 27 after 29 professional fights. On May 16, 1998 Gerena challenged Genaro Hernandez' WBC super-featherweight title but lost via 12-round unanimous decision.
