Paul Hodkinson was born in Liverpool, England on September 14, 1965. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on July 19, 1986 against Mark Champney. Hodkinson defeated Champney via 2nd round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Hodkinson got his first shot at a world title at the age of 24 after 18 professional fights. On June 2, 1990 Hodkinson challenged Marcos Villasana's WBC featherweight title but lost via 8th round TKO.
