Luis Alberto Pérez was born in Managua, Nicaragua on April 6, 1978. He made his professional debut at the age of 18 years on November 2, 1996 against Daniel Rosales. Pérez defeated Rosales via 3rd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Pérez became a world champion at the age of 24 after 21 professional fights. He challenged Félix Machado for the IBF super-flyweight title and defeated the champion via 12-round split decision, winning his first world title.
