Koichi Wajima was born in Shibetsu, Hokkaidō, Japan on April 21, 1943. He made his professional debut at the age of 25 years on June 15, 1968 against Akira Takekawa. Wajima defeated Takekawa via 1st round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Wajima became a world champion at the age of 28 after 24 professional fights. He challenged Carmelo Bossi for the WBA welterweight title and defeated the champion via 15-round split decision, winning his first world title.
He then went on to successfully win the super-welterweight (WBA, WBC, The Ring) titles also to become a two-division world champion — and undisputed at super-welterweight.
Wajima's last fight was an 11th-round TKO loss to Eddie Gazo at age 34, on June 7, 1977, in which he was fighting for the WBA and The Ring super-welterweight titles.
