Shinji Takehara was born in Fuchū, Hiroshima, Japan on January 25, 1972. He made his professional debut at the age of 17 years on May 15, 1989 against Masao Tadano. Takehara defeated Tadano via 4th round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Takehara became a world champion at the age of 23 after 23 professional fights. He challenged Jorge Castro for the WBA middleweight title and defeated the champion via 12-round unanimous decision, winning his first world title.
Takehara's last fight was a 9th-round TKO loss to William Joppy at age 24, on June 24, 1996, in which he lost his WBA middleweight title.
