John Conteh was born in Toxteth, Liverpool, Lancashire, England on May 27, 1951. He made his professional debut at the age of 20 years on October 18, 1971 against Okacha Boubekeur. Conteh defeated Boubekeur via 1st round KO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.

Conteh became a world champion at the age of 23 after 26 professional fights. He challenged Jorge Ahumada for the vacant WBC light-heavyweight title and defeated Ahumada via 15 round points decision, winning his first world title.
