Boxing Career
Abner Mares was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico on November 28, 1985. He made his professional debut at the age of 19 years on January 6, 2005 against Luis Malave. Mares defeated Malave via 2nd round TKO, making a successful beginning of his pro career.
Mares got his first shot at a world title at the age of 24 after 20 professional fights. On May 22, 2010 Mares challenged Yonnhy Pérez' IBF bantamweight title but lost via 12-round majority decision.
He became a world champion on August 13, 2011 at the age of 25 years, after by defeating Joseph Agbeko, the then-reining IBF bantamweight champion, via 12-round majority decision. This was his 23rd fight as a professional.
He then went on to successfully conquer the super-bantamweight (WBC) and featherweight (WBC, WBA) divisions as well to become a three-division world champion.
Mares' latest fight was against Miguel Flores on September 4, 2022, which ended in a majority decision draw.
